PharmD, BCPS, Professor and Vice Chair for Education,
University of Maryland School of Pharmacy
Dr. Haines is Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy. His direct patient care responsibilities include serving as a clinical specialist at the West Palm Beach VA Medical Center where he provides medication therapy management services. He served on the Steering Committee for the National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP) for 5 years (2001-2006) and is a Past-President of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy.
Dr. Haines’ research interests include medication use behavior, diabetes management, cardiovascular disease prevention, smoking cessation, and evaluation of instructional methods.
Dr. Haines earned his B.S. in Pharmacy from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Sciences and his Pharm.D. from the University of Texas at Austin. He completed a Pharmacy Practice Residency at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston as well as a Primary Care Residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. He is a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist and Board Certified in Advanced Diabetes Management. He was elected a Distinguished Practitioner in the National Academies of Practice in 2006.

Learning Objectives:
Identify patients with acute venous thrombosis who can be safely managed in the outpatient setting.
Recommend an appropriate treatment regimen for the management of acute venous thrombosis including drug(s), dose(s), route(s), and duration.
Recognize patients who require long-term therapy for secondary prevention of venous thrombosis.
Design a monitoring and education plan for a patient who is being treated for venous thrombosis in the outpatient setting.
Quantify stroke risk in patients with atrial fibrillation using a scoring system.
Recommend appropriate long-term antithrombotic therapy for stroke prevention in patients with atrial fibrillation.
Manage antithrombotic therapy during the acute onset of atrial fibrillation, and around cardioversion and ablative procedures.
