Description
Human factors science can inform the design of work systems and health information technologies to enhance clinician workflow, reduce inappropriate workarounds, and strengthen patient safety. Human factors principles are relatively new to many members of the healthcare community. This session will provide an overview of some human factors approaches that are relevant to informatics, especially as it relates to prescribing and medication management.

  • Describe human factors concepts for the various medication use technologies and automation to improve utilization and safety.
  • Describe human factors engineering principles and current research relating to health information technology.
  • Name specific strategies in education and process changes to increase organizational competencies in human factors.
  • Outline the future impact human factors engineering will have on clinical and pharmacy informatics.
