Joseph Hill currently serves as director of federal legislative affairs for the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists. He advocates ASHPs positions on critical issues before members of Congress and their staff. Prior to that he was government affairs manager for the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists where he represented ASCP before state and federal legislators.

American Society of Health-System Pharmacists
Karen joined the ASHP Government Affairs Division as the Director of State Affairs and Grassroots Advocacy in November 2010. In this role, she directs 3 key advocacy programs: (1) developing strategic partnerships with ASHPs state affiliates in order to promote state legislative and regulatory activity that positively impacts health-system pharmacists and oppose those laws and rules that adversely impact the profession; (2) expanding our grassroots advocacy program by providing ASHP members with the vital tools and resources they need to be successful advocates on Capitol Hill; (3) growing the ASHP political action committee in order to help elect Congressional candidates who understand -- and will be vocal champions for -- the unique and essential role of health-system pharmacists as the medication-use experts on healthcare delivery teams. Karen has an MA in political science, and she taught government courses at the University of Washington. Prior to joining ASHP, she was a Research Director in state legislative politics for 10 years.

Description
This session will examine the issues faced by federal and state policy makers that impact health system practice. Solutions to drug shortages, user fees for generic drugs, a regulatory pathway for biosimilars, and effective use of pharmacy technicians are just a few of the issues that will be considered by Congress, the FDA, and state boards of pharmacy. The impact on health system practice will be reviewed.

- Explain the federal legislative and regulatory issues impacting health system pharmacy.
- Explain the state legislative and regulatory issues impacting health system pharmacy.
