Matthew Gentry, PharmD is the pediatric infectious disease pharmacist and co-director of the Antimicrobial Stewardship program at Children's Hospital of Orange County. He completed pharmacy school at University of North Carolina Eshelman School of Pharmacy. Dr. Gentry completed his first year of residency training at Arkansas Children's Hospital and a second year of specialty residency training at Monroe Carrel Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt.

Rita K. Jew, Pharm.D. received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from University of California at San Francisco and completed an ASHP-Accredited Residency in Clinical Pharmacy at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. She is Executive Director of Pharmacy & Clinical Nutrition Services at Childrens Hospital of Orange County since 2005, where she directs all operational and clinical activities of the 24-hour inpatient pharmacy services, outpatient pharmacy services, investigational drug services, Pharmacy Residency Program and Clinical Nutrition and Lactation services. She held adjunct faculty appointments at various Schools of Pharmacy and School of Nursing. Dr. Jew is an established neonatal and pediatric practitioner and has presented extensively at local, state and national meetings for pharmacists, nurses and physicians. Her areas of expertise include neonatal drug therapy, drug use during ECMO, immunizations, extemporaneous compounding, medication safety, and technology and automation. She is actively involved and has held leadership positions in local, state and national pharmacy societies. Dr. Jew received the Jonathan Roberts award from DVSHP in 2004, the Fellow of ASHP in 2007, the Distinguished Service Award from ASHP Section of Clinical Specialists and Scientists in 2010 and Friend of Nursing award from the Association of California Nurse Leaders in 2012.

Talene A. Metjian received her Bachelors degree and her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science (now USIP). She completed a Pediatric Pharmacy Practice Residency at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). Since 2003, she has been the Manager of the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program at CHOP.

Description
This session will explore the impact of antimicrobial stewardship programs on antimicrobial use, physician interventions, patient outcomes, rates of antimicrobial resistance and antimicrobial costs in the pediatric setting. By attending this session you will also be able to recommend dosing strategies, and identify differences in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of drugs commonly used during ECMO.
LEARNER OUTCOMES:
- Describe the prevalence, characteristics, and barriers to implementation of antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASPs) in pediatrics.
- Discuss the California Antimicrobial Stewardship Program Initiative and its potential implication across the nation.
- Discuss the impact of antimicrobial stewardship programs on antimicrobial use, physician interventions, patient outcomes, rates of antimicrobial resistance and antimicrobial costs from two childrens hospitals perspectives.
- Identify differences in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of drugs commonly use during ECMO.
- Recommend dosing strategies for drugs commonly use during ECMO.
