Dr. Mary Zupanc is the CHOC Childrens Specialists Division Chief of Neurology, Director of the CHOC Comprehensive Epilepsy Program and Clinical Professor, Department of Pediatrics, UC Irvine. Dr. Zupanc is one of the countrys most highly regarded pediatric epileptologists. She received her MD degree at UCLA, her pediatric training at the University of Washington and her pediatric neurology training at the University of Wisconsin. Her training in epilepsy has been broad, with additional training at the University of Wisconsin, UCLA, and Stanford University. She has been instrumental in the development of comprehensive pediatric epilepsy programs at Mayo Clinic, Columbia University, and NYU.
Since 2001, Dr. Zupanc has been the Director of the Comprehensive Epilepsy Program and Chief of the Child Neurology Division at Childrens Hospital of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. Dr. Zupanc is boarded in Pediatrics by the American Board of Pediatrics and in Child Neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. She is boarded in Clinical Neurophysiology by both the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and the American Board of Clinical Neurophysiology.
Among Dr. Zupancs many awards are those for teaching recognition and clinical care at each of the major institutions she has served. She has published many articles in peer reviewed journals, most notably the Journal of Pediatric Neurology regarding pediatric epilepsy surgery and outcomes, the efficacy of Felbamate, and infantile spasms. Dr. Zupanc is the author of 15 textbook chapters including the chapter on epilepsy surgery in the primary textbook in the field: Pediatric Neurology.

Beth is a Registered Dietitian who has worked exclusively with ketogenic diet therapies for brain disorders for the past 18 years. She has authored many publications and in 1997 developed KetoCalculator, an online program for calculating diets which includes a medication database with carbohydrate content. Beth has provided training on ketogenic diet therapies to over 60 hospitals including in the Far East, Europe and South America.

Description
This session will explore the role of the pharmacist in the management of the ketogenic diet as well as provide an update on new anticonvulsant agents.
LEARNER OUTCOMES:
- Describe the mechanisms of action and place in therapy of newly available antiepileptic medications use in pediatric patients.
- Discuss the efficacy and toxicity related to the ketogenic diet when used in children with intractable epilepsy.
- Identify the challenges in the pharmacologic management of pediatric epilepsy.
- Identify the role of a pharmacist in the management of the ketogenic diet.
- Review the clinical history of ketogenic diet.
