Christopher Fortier,
PharmD, Manager, Pharmacy Support & OR Services,
Medical University of South Carolina
Christopher Fortier is the Manager of Pharmacy Support and Operating Room (OR) Services at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Medical Center and Adjunct Assistant Professor with the South Carolina College of Pharmacy. In this position Dr. Fortier oversees procurement/contracting, 3 OR pharmacies, investigational drug, nuclear pharmacy, controlled substances, repackaging, and compounding services. Dr. Fortier also has lead the implementation of bar code medication administration, smart infusions pumps, and medication reconciliation across the organization.
Dr. Fortier received his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Connecticut and completed both a PGY-1 Practice Residency and a PGY-2 Health-System Pharmacy Administration Residency at the Medical University of South Carolina Medical Center.
He has previously lectured on numerous topics relating to informatics, automation, pharmacy leadership, project management, and human resource issues on the state, national, and international levels. He has authored several textbook chapters, abstracts, and articles in peer reviewed journals. Chris has also serves as the program chair for the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Summer Meeting Informatics Programming Series.
Dr. Fortier was selected to represent South Carolina as a voting member at the ASHP/ASHP Foundations Pharmacy Practice Model Initiative Summit in 2010. He currently is the UHC Pharmacy Councils Executive Committee Member-At-Large and previously served 3 years on the University HealthSystem Consortiums (UHC) Pharmacy Councils Executive Committee and chaired the Medication Use Informatics and Technology Committee. Dr. Fortier also served on the ASHP New Practitioners Forum Executive Committee for two years, serving as the vice-chair in 2006-2007. As a member of the ASHP Practice Managers Section he served as the chair of the sections Leadership Development Advisory Group (2007-2008). He was a representative on the ASHP Foundations Center for Health-System Pharmacy Leadership Student & New Practitioner Leadership Task Force (2007-2010). Dr. Fortier is currently the South Carolina Society of Health System Pharmacists Secretary and serves as a State Delegate. In 2008, Dr. Fortier received the ASHP New Practitioner Forums Distinguished Service Award.

Bob Hammond,
RPh, MS, Automation/Operations Coordinator,
OhioHealth Corporation
Mr. Bob Hammond, M.S., R.Ph., graduated from The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio with a B.S. degree in pharmacy. In 1987, he received his M.S. in Pharmacy Administration from The Ohio State University. Although Mr. Hammond has served in a variety of management and information technology positions, he is currently an Automation & Operations Coordinator for OhioHealth Pharmacy System with three McKesson Robots, three McKesson Med Carousels, 300+ Automated Dispensing Cabinets, MedBoard tracking system, plus several other software applications. Mr. Hammond is a member of ASHP, OSHP, COSHP and APhA. In 2001 Mr. Hammond retired from the U.S. Army Reserves as a Lieutenant Colonel with 29 years of service, the last two years he was the Commander of the 914th Combat Support Hospital (HUS). Mr. Hammond has been with Riverside Methodist Hospital and OhioHealth since 1969.

Matthew Maughan,
PharmD, Director of Pharmacy,
Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital
Matt Maughan is the Director of Pharmacy at Rainbow Babies & Childrens Hospital at the University Hospital of Cleveland. Until recently, Dr. Maughan was the Manager of the Childrens Hospital Pharmacy at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Medical Center and Adjunct Assistant Professor with the South Carolina College of Pharmacy. Dr. Maughan is responsible for the pharmacy services at Rainbow Babies as well as assisting the University Health System with pediatric pharmacy standards and practices. In his role at MUSC Dr. Maughan led the search and implementation efforts of IV Workflow Software.
Dr. Maughan received his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and completed both a PGY-1 Practice Residency and a PGY-2 Health-System Pharmacy Administration Residency at the Medical University of South Carolina Medical Center.
For the past 5 years Dr. Maughan championed the effort to consolidate the pediatric pharmacy services into one 24 hour pharmacy staffed by pharmacists and technicians that understand the challenges and opportunities of pediatric medicine. As a part of this effort Dr. Maughan has established a thriving internship program, pharmacist development program, and assisted in the department effort to establish a technician career ladder. Dr. Maughans efforts have largely been to streamline the pharmacy operations while further showcasing clinical pharmacy practice to nurse and physician colleagues.

Noreen Todd,
BS Pharm, MHA, Director of Pharmacy,
Middlesex Hospital
Noreen Todd RPh. BS Pharm, MHA received her BS in Pharmacy at Northeastern University in Boston and her Masters in Health Administration from Western CT State University. She recently was the Director of Pharmacy at Middlesex Hospital in Middletown CT.
Prior to that, she was the General Manager of Chartwell Southern New England, a branch of the Home Infusion company.She has served as the co chair and Chair of the VHA Northeast Pharmacy Director group. While at Middlesex, Noreen has overseen the implementation of CPOE, Pyxis ParRX, Pyxis Anesthesia system, TCG high speed packager and the Swisslog Boxpicker.Noreen has transitioned to St. Joseph College School of Pharmacy in May as the Coordinator of Experiential Education.

Description
With the major goals of the Pharmacy Practice Model Initiative include striving to move all pharmacists to the bedside and having technicians playing a larger, more independent, distribution role. Therefore, the implementation of optimized automated systems within the inpatient pharmacy becomes much more critical. Come and learn about the innovative medication safety automated systems a few organizations have put in place as part of their plan to achieve the future pharmacy practice model.
- Describe the various automation technologies found in the inpatient pharmacy that automate and improve distributive workload.
- Discuss implementation and optimization considerations in attempting to achieve a fully automated pharmacy department.
- Outline the key roles of the pharmacist, pharmacy technicians, and other support staff play in managing these systems within the department.
