Participants planning to attend this session are encouraged to attend the prior session, “Moral and Ethical Obligations in Providing Care: Is the Profession Meeting Its Social Contract?” on Tuesday, June 8, 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

LEARNER OUTCOMES:
  • Define an authentic professional focus in pharmacy practice and explain its value from the perspective of the patient, the hospital or health system, and the pharmacist.
  • Discuss three or more factors in the current health care environment that are threatening the ability of hospital and health-system pharmacists to pursue their practice with an authentic professional focus.
  • Discuss why practice-change efforts must encompass the pharmacist's self concept as well as the structure of the practice model.
  • Explain the extent to which current pharmacy practice models in hospitals and health systems operate under the principles of professionalism.
  • Outline what selected stakeholders can do to ensure that professionalism prevails in the pharmacy practice model including practice-site teams of pharmacists, national and state pharmacist associations, and schools of pharmacy.
