Dr. Peter Angood is the inaugural Senior Advisor for Patient Safety at National Quality Forum (NQF). In this role, he oversees development and maintenance of the NQF Safe Practices and NQF Serious Reportable Events, as well as patient safety activities related to the National Priorities Partnership and other enterprise-wide initiatives.
Dr. Angood recently was Chief Patient Safety Officer and a Vice President for The Joint Commission where he oversaw the annual development of the Joint Commission's National Patient Safety Goals and served as a lead for the World Health Organization's Collaborating Center for Patient Safety Solutions, a component of the WHO Alliance for Patient Safety. Prior to joining The Joint Commission, Dr. Angood accrued 25 years of academic and clinical experience, initially with hospitals of McGill University and then subsequently recruited into faculty and hospital administrative positions at the University of Pennsylvania, Yale University and at Washington University in St. Louis. He recently served as President for the Society of Critical Care Medicine (2005), a 14,000-member international organization, and is the author of over 120 publications. Dr. Angood's research interests have addressed patient safety, injury prevention, benchmarking, outcomes management, resource utilization, medical education, advanced medical and telemedicine technologies, and the utility of simulation technology.
Dr. Angood received his medical degree from the University of Manitoba in Canada. He completed his training in General Surgery at McGill University in Montreal, as well as fellowship training in Trauma Surgery and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, FL.
