Karla M. Miller is the Director of Medication Usage and Safety for Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) in Nashville, Tennessee. She is a board certified psychiatric pharmacists and spent two years as the clinical pharmacist specializing in neuropsychiatry at Centennial Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee. Dr. Miller is an Assistant Professor at the University of Tennessee College Of Pharmacy. She received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from West Virginia University. She completed a pharmacy practice residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, and a two-year fellowship in neuropsychiatry at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. Dr. Miller is a professional member of ASHP, ACCP, and CPNP.

Dr. Daryl Shorter is an Assistant Professor, Menninger Department of Psychiatry Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. His practice is at the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Administration Medical Center. He was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, and attended Rice University for his Bachelor of Sociology degree. Dr. Shorter then attended Medical School at Baylor College of Medicine and did his General Psychiatry Residency at The Ohio State University. He completed the Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship at NYU School of Medicine/Bellevue Hospital in 2008. Dr. Shorters research interests include issues related to spirituality and recovery and substance abuse treatment in marginalized communities.

- Demonstrate the ability to conduct a thorough interview with substance abusing patients that will detail drug-use histories, prior treatment, patient
motivation for treatment, and comorbidity.
- Describe chronic illness model of treatment in
addicted patients.
- Devise a plan to minimize the risk of the development of substance-use disorders with prescription medications and a plan to detect substance-use disorders should they occur.
- Explain how to evaluate and effectively treat patients at risk for alcohol withdrawal.
- Explain how to treat, refer, or manage pain patients who have untreated addiction, are in current addiction treatment, or are in recovery from addiction.
