Dr. Hobson has spent much of his career in pharmacy education, helping to develop curricula and instructional methodologies. At the Albany College of Pharmacy, he developed a nationally recognized model clerkship program in academic pharmacy, as well as a dual-focused residency program in ambulatory care/adult teaching and learning.

His service to the pharmacy community is varied and includes membership in the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP). Dr. Hobson has chaired the AACP Liberal Education Special Interest Group, served as AACP Institute faculty, and was a member of the Best Evidence Pharmacy Education and Enhancing Communication Abilities taskforce.

Dr. Hobson has also been involved with curricular planning, development, and assessment. His research and faculty development activities are focused on student abilities development, curricular models, and their implementation and maintenance. He has had six books and more than 50 articles published on his research into issues of student motivation to learn, and reading and writing as essential communication and academic skills. His research has received the International Writing Centers Association's Research Award (1999) and the Robert J. Menges Research Award (2001) from the Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education. Dr. Hobson writes and leads workshops at colleges and universities around the country that focus on active and collaborative learning, student motivation, writing across the curriculum, abilities-based education, and outcomes-based assessment.

Dr. Philip E. Johnston, Pharm.D., Founding Dean of the Belmont University School of Pharmacy graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy in 1974, working for his alma mater from 1973 to 1982. He spent over twenty years in various directorships and professorial positions at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. For ten years Dr. Johnston taught as an adjunct faculty member at Belmont's School of Physical Therapy, and, in early 2007, joined Belmont full time. His past experiences have involved personnel management, development of pharmacy policy, creation of multiple post-graduate residency training programs, research, and community projects. While he has been widely published on numerous subjects in various pharmacy journals and textbooks, Dr. Johnston's research has most recently focused on the benefits of computerized order entry in health care institutions, patient safety, and safe labeling of over-the-counter products. Areas of practice interest include pharmacy education programs and innovative pharmacist practice skills.
Dr. Johnston and his wife have lived in the Nashville area for twenty-five years, and they have two sons. He and his family are active members of the Methodist Church where he carries roles in leadership and service. For relaxation he enjoys golf, landscape design, and reading.
