C. DOUGLAS MONROE, RPh, MS, FCSHP, is Project Manager for Biotechnology, Emerging Pharmaceutical Technology, and Specialty Pharmacy for Kaiser Permanente Drug Information Services in Downey and Oakland, California. Douglas received a Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Science degree from University of Oklahoma and a Master of Science in Hospital Pharmacy from Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts. Prior to working for Kaiser Permanente, Douglas served Hoag Memorial Hospital in Newport Beach, California, in several roles including Director of Pharmacy Services. Other career experiences included work as a Clinical Pharmacist, Inpatient Supervisor Pharmacist, and Assistant Director of Hospital Pharmacy. For the last twelve years, Douglas has worked in Drug Information at Kaiser Permanente Regional Pharmacy Offices. He works closely with the Formulary team, drug usage management pharmacists, Kaiser Permanente Specialty Pharmacy Program, and other providers in the integrated healthcare delivery system. Among other responsibilities, Douglas evaluates clinical trial literature and works with physician groups in Northern and Southern California to develop guidelines and usage plans for biopharmaceuticals, specialty pharmaceuticals, and emerging technologies such as pharmacogenomics. He has presented nationally on biotechnology drugs and formulary review. One recently published related article was “Kaiser Permanente's Evaluation and Management of Biotech Drugs: Assessing, Measuring, and Affecting Use” published in Health Affairs in September of 2006. Douglas is a member of the American Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists, the California Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists and its Orange County chapter, and the Academy of Manage Care Pharmacy.
