George D. Mills,

The Joint Commission
George Mills is the Director for the Department of Engineering at The Joint Commission. In this role, Mr. Mills provides standards interpretation and education to The Joint Commission’s Surveyors and accredited organizations, reviews equivalency requests, conducts surveys, and is a nationally recognized speaker. Previously, Mr. Mills served as Senior Engineer for the Standards Interpretation Group in the division of Accreditation and Certification Operations at The Joint Commission.
Mr. Mills has over 25 years of experience in the health care setting, and previous experience in the construction industry and structural steel fabrication. Prior to joining The Joint Commission, he served as a Director of Facilities; held national positions related to Codes and Standards, including serving as Director of Codes & Compliance for ASHE; and served as a consultant.
Mr. Mills is a Fellow with the American Society for Healthcare Engineering (FASHE), a Certified Healthcare Facility Manager (CHFM), a Certified Energy Manager (CEM), a Certified Healthcare Safety Professional (CHSP). He is also a past President of HESNI – a local ASHE chapter.
Mr. Mills earned an MBA from California Coast University in Santa Ana, California.

The Joint Commission - Department of Engineering
John Maurer is currently an Engineer in the Department of Engineering at The Joint Commission.
Mr. Maurer came to The Joint Commission in 2007. He has been the Facilities Manager at a rural 87-bed hospital in the Chicago area, and a Facilities Director at a 157-bed hospital while serving as a Life Safety Code Surveyor. In addition to normal facilities functions, Mr. Maurer has had the responsibility for several construction projects, energy reduction and efficiency initiatives, property management, and safety programs.
Mr. Maurer is a Certified Healthcare Facilities Manager (CHFM), a Certified Healthcare Safety Professional (CHSP), and a member of the American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE) and the Healthcare Engineers Society of Northern Illinois (HESNI), serving on the HESNI Board of Directors since 2008; President for 2010 and 2011.
Mr. Maurer received his Bachelor’s degree in Business Management from Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, IL.

Anne Guglielmo,

Anne Guglielmo is an Engineer in the Department of Engineering at The Joint Commission. She serves as one of four engineers providing support for the Life Safety, Environment of Care and Emergency Management standards. In this role, she provides interpretation of standards, reviews equivalency and extension requests, reviews survey reports, conducts Intracycle Monitoring conference calls, serves as
faculty for educational programs and conducts on-site surveys.
Ms. Guglielmo joined to The Joint Commission in 2010 with 10 years experience in Fire Protection Engineering. Prior to joining The Joint Commission she worked as a Fire Protection Engineer in the Design and Construction Industry. In this role she was responsible for reviewing plans for fire protection and life safety code compliance, field survey and documentation, preparing and presenting project submittals, energy code compliance modeling and project equivalency identification and preparation.
Ms. Guglielmo is a Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS), a Certified Healthcare Safety Professional (CHSP) and a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited Professional (LEED A.P.) She is a member of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) and the International Code Council (ICC). Ms. Guglielmo received her Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering, specialized in Fire and Life Safety Engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology, in Chicago, Illinois.

In response to last year’s ASHE Annual Conference attendee comment cards, ASHE created this Q&A, free-form session with the Joint Commission staff. Question cards will be available at the Joint Commission booth in the Exhibit Hall prior to this session, which will give you the opportunity to formulate your question and for the Joint Commission staff to prepare a response. Questions will also be taken from the audience during the session. This session will enable you to:
