Ian Morrison, PhD, is an internationally known author, consultant, and speaker specializing in long-term forecasting and planning with particular emphasis on health care and the changing business environment. Ian has written, lectured, and consulted on a wide variety of forecasting, strategy and health care topics for government, industry, and a variety of nonprofit organizations in North America, Europe and Asia. Ian has worked with more than 100 Fortune 500 companies in health care, manufacturing, information technology and financial services. He is the author of Healthcare in the New Millennium: Vision, Values and Leadership. He is a Senior Fellow at the Institute for the Future (IFTF) and its former president (from 1990 to 1996), responsible for leading IFTF’s growth and success over that period.

Michele Flanagin, Vice President of Delivery System Strategy,
Kaiser Foundation Health Plan
Michele Flanagin provides the planning and market research that enables Kaiser Permanente to build a health care delivery network capable of supporting its nearly
9 million members. Kaiser Permanente will invest more than $24 billion on its capital development and replacement program over the next 10 years, making its hospital construction program the largest in the nation—and the largest in the history of the company.
Michele has more than 20 years’ experience in strategic and financial planning for health care. Prior to coming to Kaiser Permanente, she was vice president of strategic planning, marketing, and program development for Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, where she was responsible for strategic planning, program development, marketing, and capital budget development for the organization.
Prior to her career at Rush, Michele was vice president of planning and marketing at St. Francis Hospital, an SSM Health Care system hospital in Blue Island Ill., where she led system-wide strategic planning projects.
Early in her career, Michele worked at the University of Chicago Hospitals, where she led clinical program planning initiatives and a major operational redesign project. She earned a bachelor’s degree and a master’s of business administration degree from Northwestern University.

Patrick Muldoon presently serves as the President and Chief Executive Officer of HealthAlliance Hospitals, Inc. and Central New England HealthAlliance, Inc. serving the residents of North Central Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire. HealthAlliance Hospital is the largest community hospital within the UMass Memorial Health Care System. Patrick has extensive experience in various administrative roles, including service as President and Chief Executive Officer of South County Hospital (RI) Healthcare System and Northern Berkshire Health System (MA). Mr. Muldoon began his career in association management at the American Osteopathic Hospital Association (IL) before beginning his hospital career at Cranston General Hospital (RI). At age 28, Patrick served in his initial CEO position at Riverside Hospital in Michigan. Patrick earned his undergraduate degree in Health Services Administration from Providence College (RI) and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Loyola University of Chicago. He is currently a Fellow of the American College of Health Care Executives.
Mr. Muldoon currently serves on the Board of Trustees of the Massachusetts Hospital Association and was elected in 2012 to serve as Chair Elect of the Board. Patrick has served in several leadership positions with the American Hospital Association and The Joint Commission. Patrick’s opinions are sought by the electronic and print media and he is regularly quoted in the Boston Globe, Worcester Telegram & Gazette, Worcester Business Journal and the Sentinel & Enterprise newspapers in North Central Massachusetts. Throughout his career, Patrick has placed a high priority on service to the community. He is the Past Chair of the United Way Capital Campaign and Past Chair of the North Central Massachusetts Chamber of Commerce. He serves on the Boards of the Worker’s Credit Union, Spanish American Center, the Shine Initiative of Fidelity Bank and the Regional Economic Development Institute at Fitchburg State University. In recognition of Community Service, Mr. Muldoon received the Multi Cultural Center’s Distinguished Service Award in 2009 and the Community Health Champion Award from Community Health Connections in 2010.
Collaborating with physicians, employees and the community, Mr. Muldoon initially led a financial turnaround at HealthAlliance Hospital in 2005. Since that time the team has led the hospital to rank as one of the top ten performing hospitals in Massachusetts. The hospital community has heavily invested in primary care physicians, outstanding quality performance outcomes and patient safety through advanced information technology. Consumer Reports magazine ranked HealthAlliance Hospital as the “safest” hospital in Massachusetts and one of the top 20 safest hospitals in the country. HealthAlliance Hospital has been named as one of the 25 most wireless hospitals in the United States for three consecutive years and in 2011 and 2012 the hospital received the 100 Most Wired Award from the American Hospital Association. HealthAlliance Hospital is one of a select group of hospitals that successfully met the stage 1, “Meaningful Use” criteria established by the Centers for Medicare and Medicare Services (CMS) in 2011 and 2012.

Description
Strategic planning, health care reform, reimbursement and the geographic delivery of services all have an effect on design and construction of health care facilities . This plenary session will be a moderated discussion of these impacts -- a comparison of differences from across the country from the CEO’s perspective. Ian Morrison will moderate this session. Each panelist will discuss the effects from his point-of-view, then it will be opened up for discussion and Q&A.
