On the morning of February 9, 2001, the USS Greeneville, under the command of Navy Commander Scott Waddle, collided with a Japanese fishing vessel. The commercial fishing boat sank in minutes, killing nine. Instead of looking to place blame, Commander Waddle stepped forward and assumed total responsibility for this disaster. When he took the stand during the Navy’s Court of Inquiry, he described his role, fully aware that his testimony could be used against him in a court-martial.
