Mike Crowley began his career as a Fire Protection Engineer with Rolf Jensen & Associates (RJA) with a BS in Fire Protection and Safety Engineering, and earned an MBA along the way. He is active in NFPA Technical Committees including NFPA 150 Standard on Fire and Life Safety in Animal Housing, NFPA 101 Healthcare Occupancies and Means of Egress, and NFPA 99 Fundamentals Committee Chair. Mr. Crowley is a Life Safety Code instructor teaching for NFPA. He is currently Senior Vice President and Healthcare Market Leader for RJA. Mike is a consultant to architects, facility managers and building owners around the world.

NFPA 101: Life Safety Code® has had four revisions since the 2000 edition was published and adopted by CMS and the Joint Commission. This presentation will review the major Life Safety Code changes that will affect the design and operations of a new or existing health care facility and summarize the major differences in requirements and allowances between the 2012 edition and the current CMS requirements from the 2000 edition. This session will enable you to—
• Identify the major code changes from the 2000 to the 2012 edition of NFPA 101.
• Discuss advantages of the new code requirements.
