A senior member of Shepley Bulfinch's healthcare design practice, David has more than 20 years of experience in master planning and diagnostic and treatment space planning for academic medical centers, childrens hospitals, and specialty facilities. His clients include Childrens Hospital Boston, Childrens Hospital of Wisconsin, Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, and the Medical College of Virginia Hospital. One of his recent projects, Concord Hospital, in Concord, NH, is the first LEED certified community hospital in New England. David joined the firm in 1999 and was named a Senior Associate in 2005. A LEED Accredited Professional, he received a Bachelors of Environmental Design from the University of Colorado, Boulder.

Ray Gerbi, Facilities Consultant; former,
Concord Hospital
Ray Gerbi served in a hands-on position as Vice President, Facilities, on over $100M in project construction at Concord Hospital in the last 10 years alone, nearly doubling the size of this regional medical center. Now retired, he continues to consult to the hospital on special facilities projects.

Mike Lynch MD serves as the Physician Head for Emergency Services at Concord Hospital through his association with Concord Emergency Medical Associates. He was instrumental in leading his entire clinical team thru the planning and design process of th renovation and expansion of Concord Hospitals emergency department and continues to strive for improvements within the ED.

Description
The head of clinical services, the facility director, and the project designer for Concord Hospital will present their perspectives on the design and planning process for transforming an emergency department. Using plan diagrams, baseline data, and volume projections, the presenters will discuss competing pressures, expectations, and demands for the project as well as the strategic decision-making process used to address them. This session will enable you to:
● Implement a collaborative culture that stresses collective needs to achieve a patient-focused facility design.
● Develop a design template that can accommodate an appropriate level of design variation and apply it as a strategy for cost-effectiveness and high utilization.
● Plan a major expansion and multiphase renovation of a functioning emergency department that delivers project goals while meeting schedule and budget demands.
● Establish internal departmental communication to foster design decisions and promote process change.
