Andrew Streifel, Senior Environmental Hospital Specialist,
Dept. of Environemntal Health and Safety at the University of Minnesota
Andrew Streifel is the Hospital Environment Specialist with the Department of Environmental Health and Safety at the University of Minnesota. His role is to assist with environmental issues as they pertain to patient and employee safety from environmental hazard exposure. He has more than 30 years experience problem solving environmental infecton related issues in health care facilities. This experience has provided information to help change the design and construction practice for health care facilities. He serves on several standards maintenance committees including ASHRAE Std 170 for Health Care Facilites, NACADA standard for Duct Cleaning and Guideline for Design and Construction of Healthcare Facilities AIA/FGI. Recent publications pertain to fungal air quality in hospitals, isolation patient room ventilation performance and definition of airborne infection isolation room seal of surfaces. Mr. Streifel has helped train over 10,000 participants around the world in healthcare construction practice for infection prevention.

Description
Water as an issue for infection prevention is a new focus for evidence-based infection control design. Water quality is often taken for granted because water is readily available; however, water stagnation in hospitals leads to biofilm formation with pathogenic antibiotic-resistant water bacteria potentially in the mix. Therefore, efforts to control Legionella and other gram-negative bacteria are often required to keep hospital drinking water safe. This session will address the complex nature of plumbing and microbial ecology and efforts to control microbial growth, as well as the new ASHRAE 188 standard Prevention of Legionellosis Associated with Building Water Systems. The session will enable you to:
* List waterborne pathogens that could affect hospitalized patients and identify where they are mostly commonly found.
* List control measures necessary to implement a water-related infection control risk assessment for microbial safety.
