Description
As a community cancer center becomes more energy-efficient, the facility is able to reduce expenses while still enhancing the care environment for patients, families, and staff. This session will address six proven strategies for lowering utility bills by adapting exterior building materials, lighting, and mechanical systems. This session will enable you to:

* Describe the impact that exterior building materials, lighting, and mechanical systems have on utility bills.
* List six strategies for improved energy efficiency and explain how they can be used within your facility.

LEARNER OUTCOMES:
  • Describe how lighting can improve energy efficiency as well as the quality of lighting.Options inlcude switching from T12 to T8 lighting as well as changing from parabolic fixtures which drive light downwards creating rooms with dark walls, to volumetric lighting that is more diffuse and can cut energy costs by more than 40%.
  • Describe how updating a buildings thermal envelope through insulation retrofits or glazing upgrades can help reduce heating and cooling loads, minimize energy consumption and create a more comfortable environment for patients and staff.
  • Identify exterior building materials, lighting and mechanical systems that will help lower utility bills.
  • Identify the advantages of converting to a centralized lighting system.
