Ken is Co-Founder and a Principal with Northstar Management Company, located in St. Louis, Missouri. Northstar provides project management services for Owners of institutional and educational facility projects. He has over 30 years experience with the design and construction process, participating in a variety of roles including designer, constructor, and Owner’s representative.
Ken is actively involved in a number of organizations including The American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE), having served on their Board of Directors as well as many of their committees, the Facility Guidelines Institute, as Board Member, and Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, as a member of the Advisory Board for the Construction Management Degree Program.
As an ASHE member, Ken has assisted in the development of educational programs for healthcare Owners, architects, and contractors; has chaired design and construction planning meetings for national conferences; and has given countless hours to enhance the process of planning, design, and construction of healthcare facilities. In 2009, Ken was awarded the Crystal Eagle Award from ASHE of the American Hospital Association. The Crystal Eagle award recognizes an outstanding ASHE member for excellent leadership qualities, innovation, and overall contribution to ASHE and the field of healthcare facilities management.
Ken is also a frequent speaker/educator for a variety of organizations on the many aspects of the design and construction process for capital construction projects. He has an engineering degree from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville and is a Certified Healthcare Constructor.

Mr. Erickson is currently the Deputy Executive Director the American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE). He has been providing service to the health care community for over 35 years in the areas of Joint Commission Environment of Care compliance, NFPA Life Safety Code® compliance, management evaluations of engineering departments and environmental infection control. He is the past director of engineering for The Joint Commission (1977 – 1981) and past director of design and construction for the American Hospital Association (1985 – 1995). He currently represents AHA/ASHE on multiple National Fire Protection Association Technical Committees such as, NFPA 101 Life Safety Code, NFPA 1 Uniform Fire Code, NFPA 5000 Building Construction and Safety Code, NFPA 90A Heating and Ventilating Code, NFPA 70 National Electrical Code – Panel 15, and is the immediate past chairman of NFPA 110 Emergency Power Supply Systems and the current chair of NFPA 99 Health Care Facilities Technical Committees. Mr. Erickson has served on the Guidelines for the Design and Construction of Hospitals and Health Care Facilities since 1978, has been the Vice Chairman of the document for the past 10 years and is the Chairman of the 2010 and 2014 edition. He is a past Chairman of the NFPA’s Health Care Section and a past member of NFPA’s Standards Council and a past member of Joint Commission’s Committee on Health Care Safety on which he served for over 6 years. Mr. Erickson is a member of ASHRAE and served on its special project committee to write the Hospital and Clinics HVAC System Design Manual. He was also a member of the CDC review committee for the Guidelines of Environmental Infection Control. He is a featured speaker at national and local conferences on codes, standards, and environmental infection control.

Description
The 2010 Guidelines for Design and Construction of Health Care Facilities have been adopted by more than 10 state agencies and numerous federal agencies. The process for developing the 2014 Guidelines begins in early 2011, and input is needed on proposed additional subjects, changes to existing language, and removal of outdated requirements. Senior members of the Health Guidelines Revision Committee (HGRC) will facilitate this session, and all input will be recorded and reported at the first meeting of the 2014 HGRC. This session will enable you to-
• Describe the elements of Part 1 of the Guidelines, based on summary presentations, that will directly affect health care facility design and construction projects in the next few years.
• Actively participate in the 2014 Guidelines revision cycle, applying your project experience to interpret and suggest improvements to this widely used document.
• Discuss issues in the planning, design, and construction of health care facilities that authorities having jurisdiction may expect your projects to comply with.
• Use information from others' experiences in applying this document to health care design and construction projects as lessons learned for your own projects.
