Description
The U.S. population is aging: Currently 12 percent of citizens are over the age of 65, and that figure is rising. Older patients come to hospitals with a unique set of issues-including co-morbidities, chronic illnesses, cognitive and psychiatric needs, problems with activities of daily living, sensory issues, and the need for socialization-that are all different from the concerns of younger adult patients. In this case study, the Ocean Medical Center in New Jersey used evidence-based design principles and information provided by the nursing staff to accommodate the needs of this growing demographic. This session will enable you to-
• List five criteria, based on the case study, that a project team needs to address in designing an acute care environment to meet the unique needs of an elderly population.
• Discuss, using information from the case study, the importance to achieving an effective patient care space of incorporating information from nurses and other clinicians in the design of patient care spaces.
• Apply methods used by project teams, as shown in the case study, to create adaptable healing environments that meet the health care needs of communities.
• List three methods, as presented in the case study, that have been successfully used to measure the impact of design innovation on patient care.
LEARNER OUTCOMES:
-
Explore the role of nurses and clinicians in influencing the design of patient care spaces they work in.
-
Identify issues important in designing Acute Care Environments for the elderly.
-
Review measures from an evidence based design project.
-
Summarize lessons learned from the design of an Acute Care for the Elderly Unit
