With Parkland Health & Hospital System since 2003, Walter Jones is responsible for the strategic vision, leadership and project direction for all new construction and renovation projects. He is currently tasked with the development of the hospitals main campus Master Facility Plan and is in charge of the management, design and construction of Parklands estimated $1.27 billion new hospital project. A registered architect, he has been practicing architecture since 1979, and has been a healthcare architect since 1990. He is a member of AIA, the Texas Society of Architects, U.S. Green Building Council and The Center for Healthcare Design.

Description
The challenges facing the new Parkland Hospital team included simultaneously executing a campus master plan, designing a new acute care hospital, and setting campus design vocabulary, while meeting an aggressive project delivery schedule and overall program budget. This session explores how the team established a clear design vision for the project, organized effective decision-making, and created a work environment for high-performance project delivery. This session will enable you to-
• List the steps a project team can use, based on the case study, to establish a project vision, build a collaborative team, and create an environment that facilitates project success.
• Describe three strategies based on the case study for connecting the planning process to all major stakeholders in a health care institution-the community, neighboring institutions, caregivers, and patients.
• Apply methods demonstrated in the case study for creating adaptable healing environments that meet the health care needs of communities.
• List several methods, as presented in the case study, that have been successfully used to measure the impact of design innovation on patient care.
