Description
Peace Island Medical Center meets the health care needs of this island community by focusing on human-centered, integrated healing. From conceptualization through occupancy, the design team ensured that the building's operations would support the natural environment while addressing clinical flexibility needs. This session will enable you to-
• Adapt the methods presented in this case study for designing and building a health care facility flexible enough to meet community needs without excessively disrupting natural resources.
• Explain the precepts of the Living Building Challenge, as demonstrated in the case study, and how addressing the impact a building has on the natural environment can result in a facility that serves its programmatic function and maintains the ecological balance.
• List the issues, as explained by the case study, that a project team needs to address when planning for a project that addresses the impact that construction and operation of the health care facility will have on the environment.
• Explain the importance of planning, as shown in case study, for delivering a health care facility project on time, on budget, and with reduced environmental impacts.
-
Explore programmatic elements that drive innovative rural hospital design in a remote island environment and address the limited staffing resources available
-
Identify strategies and techniques to balance and prioritize the myriad community desires within a rural community and the financial challenges of operating a remote, rural hospital.
-
Learn strategies used to implement the Living Building Challenge and strive for net zero energy usage, net zero water usage and limit use of toxic red list construction materials limiting impacts on the existing utility infrastructure.
