Description
The Sue and Bill Gross Women's Pavilion is an 11-level, 320,000 SF state of the art healthcare facility located in Newport Beach, California. The project has been the recipient of a number of award recognitions including the 2007 ASHE Vista Award. The facility is comprised of 152 family oriented private patient rooms, ambulatory surgery center, maternity, NICU, women's wellness center, women's outpatient services and clinical lab services. This presentation will explore how the latest technologies such as electronic health records and digital imaging modalities have been embraced and adopted along with a discussion of lessons learned. The presentation will also discuss the post occupancy adaptation of emerging technologies such as Da Vinci Robotics within the ambulatory surgery center. Lastly, the presentation will touch on the provision of technological amenities for families such as dedicated internet access within the family zone at each patient bedside and health education resources.

Discussion for the electronic health records will focus on the process used for placement of the bedside charting stations within each service line with particular emphasis on placement at the nursing unit areas and how this has supported a decentralized nursing model. The approaches used for successful integration of these systems throughout the facility included working closely with both clinical and IT staff to understand critical issues related to nurse workflow, patient care and system requirements. As well, a full mock-up of each area was constructed which yielded valuable feedback for the entire project team on the functionality for the areas involved. The changeover to digital imaging modalities will focus on the provision of challenges faced with bridging the gap between digital and analog modalities. Strategies needed to focus on allowing for a system that addressed the needs of both that would allow phasing out of the analog technology over time without remodel to the space. An example of this includes the provision of surface mounted view boxes with a wall outlet plug that could be easily removed.

Facilities are always evolving even those that have recently completed construction. This portion of the presentation will explore the issues faced with adapting emerging technologies such as Da Vinci Robotics into the existing OR suites. Also discussed will be the use of hand held charting devices and the successes and/or issues faced with use of these.

With the ever declining nursing shortage, the inclusion of family members in the delivery of care has become a necessity. This segment of the presentation will focus on whether the specific provision of internet access at within the family zone at each bedside has been of benefit to meet this goal. The discussion will also assess the same issues relative to health resource center located within the first floor lobby of the hospital.

LEARNER OUTCOMES:
  • Assess adaptation of emerging technologies such as DaVinci Robotics into recently built projects
  • Identify benefits of providing technological amenities for families
  • Identify successes and lessons learned related to changeover from analog to digital imaging and PACS systems
  • Implement best practices for integration of electronic health records into new healthcare facilities
