Description
Healthcare organizations are increasingly required to perform and demonstrate improvements in quality healthcare delivery, to meet the standards of organizations like The Joint Commission (JCAHO) and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). The change necessitates nursing units that are designed to support improved efficiencies, quality, and experience. Nursing unit design needs to contribute to fewer medication errors, facilitate nursing care models, contribute to staff retention, and prevent adverse events. Innovative design solutions have included same-handed rooms, sub-nursing stations, canted headwalls, respite areas, optimized bathroom configurations, systems for charting activities, and systems for distributed supplies and medications. A study of several nursing units from multiple facilities examines the combined impact of these and other design strategies on quality healthcare delivery. The study uses a comprehensive approach involving interviews, time*motion observations, standardized questionnaires, and questionnaires specifically designed for the study. In addition, the comprehensive approach examines how several design features of a nursing unit interact to influence quality healthcare delivery.

  • Present results from empirical research that assesses the impact of an entire nursing unit environment on quality healthcare delivery
  • Share research findings that explore and validate innovative design solutions
  • Summarize current research and evidence on the relationship between quality healthcare delivery and design
