Description
In late 2006, Governor Jennifer Granholm of Michigan signed the nation’s first Executive Directive entirely devoted to advancing the teaching and practice of Green Chemistry in a state. The Directive called the “Promotion of Green Chemistry for Sustainable Economic Development and Protection of Public Health” directed State Agencies to incorporate Green Chemistry education and practice in their operations. It also called on the State to create a Green Chemistry support program to “promote and coordinate state green chemistry research, development, demonstration, education, and technology transfer activities in Michigan.” Four years later, a robust effort has emerged to encourage Green Chemistry education and practice in the State, including an annual Green Chemistry conference and awards program, a Green Chemistry Education Network, exploration of sector-based Green Chemistry assistance, and the awarding of a Green Chemistry Clearinghouse grant to create a resource database. The speaker will detail these activities and discuss setbacks and successes.
