Description
Eco-label certifications such as Green SealTM provide science-based verification of environmentally preferred products and empower consumers to create a more sustainable world. Green Seal incorporates life-cycle thinking when determining criteria in the development of environmental standards for products and services. Standards are periodically revised to ensure that the requirements define environmental leadership and the progressively more stringent criteria serve to stimulate innovation in product design. This presentation will highlight some of the recent revisions in Green Seal standards that are consistent with the principles of green chemistry and are driving the marketplace towards sustainability. Special attention will be paid to the process of revising a stakeholder-involved environmental standard for industrial and institutional cleaners (GS-37). To conclude, the results of a life-cycle study comparing a conventional product (formulations and packaging) and a product that meets the requirements of GS-37 will be presented to demonstrate potential environmental impact reductions.
