Surgical use of human allografts continues to grow in both number and diversity, which has increased the demand for bone allografts, corneal transplants and skin grafting. In addition, tissue banks have been expanding into non-traditional tissues such as parathyroid, pancreatic islets and donor milk. The transfusion service may be invited to participate in the distribution of human tissues within the hospital because of their expertise and long history at meeting the compliance requirements. This session will begin with an overview of the procurement, processing, infectious disease testing, storage and distribution of different human tissues, demonstrating how these activities contribute to improved safety profiles for human tissues. Next, nontraditional (e.g. parathyroid, pancreatic islet, donor breast milk) tissue programs will be reviewed. The session will end with a series of case studies that will demonstrate how a properly run cGTP program can provide high quality and safe tissue products while identifying areas for improvement (e.g. donor lookbacks on tissue transmitted hepatitis C, medical errors reporting).
