This audioconference will provide an overview of the Duffy blood group system. The antigens of the Duffy blood group system are located on a glycoprotein known as Duffy antigen receptor for chemokines (DARC) which is expressed in both erythroid and non-erythroid tissues. The structure and functional role of the DARC receptor that contains the Duffy blood group antigens will be discussed, including the structure of the gene that encodes DARC. Antibodies to Duffy antigens, which are usually clinically significant, will be reviewed. The conference will conclude with a case report demonstrating the benefit of molecular genotyping for Duffy in transfusion medicine.
