Lost in Translation: Putting Evidence into Practice
Description
Key elements necessary for appropriate transfusion practice include better understanding of the clinical outcomes of transfusion in various populations, developing evidence-based transfusion guidelines and implementing best transfusion practices to optimize patient care. There is an ongoing need to evaluate transfusion indications and blood product utilization practices in various clinical settings and specific patient populations. Through a review of clinical trials and epidemiological and knowledge translation studies in transfusion medicine, this session will provide an understanding of how scientifically valid, recently completed and ongoing research studies are attempting to address these issues.

Dr. Murphy did not consent to presentation capturing and recording.

  • Assess data from knowledge translation studies that evaluate how best to implement evidence-based changes in transfusion practices.
  • Discuss current hot topics in epidemiology research in transfusion medicine.
  • Review ongoing clinical trials in transfusion medicine and understand the red cell transfusion strategies that are currently being evaluated.
