Plane Crashes and Transfusion Safety: Integrating "Crew Resource Management" into Blood Bank Quality Processes
Description
This event will use a case study format, videos and PowerPoint slides to describe a large hospital system's novel use of airline industry safety techniques to prevent mis-issuing of blood products from the transfusion service/blood bank. One speaker will cover the history and rationale for the airline industry's development of Crew Resource Management. A second speaker will present a case study describing one large hospital system's use of Crew Resource Management techniques in the operating room and, ultimately, the transfusion service. A third speaker will discuss the feasibility of integrating Crew Resource Management with other more traditional approaches to process improvement in blood banks and transfusion services.

  • Describe a case study involving one large hospital system's experience with the implementation and use of Crew Resource Management for the blood product-issuing process.
  • Discuss how the airline safety program Crew Resource Management may be applied to hospital blood banking and transfusion services processes.
