Description
This session will review donor experiences and patient clinical outcomes from the perspective of the three traditional cell sources used for HSCT, marrow, PBSCs and cord blood. In particular, the outcomes of the recently completed peripheral blood vs. marrow clinical trial will be reviewed. How the results of this trial may affect clinical decision making about which cell source might be chosen for a particular patient or group of patients will also be discussed. Recently, there has been increased interest in the use of haploidentical donors for HSCT. This session will review data on the clinical outcomes in this alternative donor setting and provide an overview of the debate surrounding the use of haploidentical donors vs. cord blood for HSCT.
This session was originally selected for Self-Assessment Module (SAM) credit. Unfortunately, test questions have not been received from all of the speakers. SAM credit is no longer being offered for this session.
-
Describe emerging therapies such as haploidentical donor transplantation and compare the clinical outcomes with more traditional transplant approaches.
-
Explain the potential clinical benefits of selecting PBSCs or marrow as the cell source for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT).
-
Review the current knowledge about peripheral blood stem cell (PBSC) and marrow donor experiences before and after donation.
