Laboratory Assessment of RBCs - Can You Tell the Difference?,,,
Neil Blumberg, MD, Professor of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine, University of Rochester Medical Center
Can we improve clinical outcomes by leukoreduction, washing and shorter red cell storage?
Description
Concerns over the possible effects of the age of stored red cells continue to be a focus for transfusion medicine. This session seeks to explore the current state of clinical studies on the age of red cells, examine the role that different RBC concentrate preparation methods may play in this discussion and look at existing and future strategies to improve the quality of blood products.
-
Describe the difference among RBC units depending on how they are prepared.
-
Discuss the reported studies on the effect of the age of blood on patient outcomes.
-
