Description
While training programs in transfusion medicine continue to expand in the US and Europe, the status of such training varies considerably across the developing world. The adequacy of such training of physicians and technologists contributes to safe and effective transfusion practice. The session will discuss the status of training in transfusion medicine in selected countries in Africa, South America and Asia. Impediments to training vary across continents and between countries, and possibilities for improvement also vary - both will be addressed in the session. The role of government programs such as PEPFAR in enhancing transfusion training and practices will also be discussed by faculty with field experience in developing countries.

  • Discuss how training of transfusion specialists and technologists might be improved in developing countries.
  • Discuss the adequacy and efficacy of training in transfusion medicine practices in developing countries in Africa, South America and Asia.
  • Discuss the role of government programs such as the President's Emergency Plan for Aids (PEPFAR) in enhancing transfusion training and practices in developing countries.
