David Friedman, MD, Associate Medical Director of Transfusion Service, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia
Description
This session will discuss the use of therapeutic plasma exchange in a variety of clinical settings. The first speaker will describe the utility of therapeutic plasma exchange in the setting of pediatric neurological disorders, discussing important clinical factors to take into consideration when performing plasma exchange in this patient population. The second speaker will discuss the pathophysiology of multisystem organ failure associated with sepsis, using an evidence-based approach to evaluate the utility of plasma exchange and other treatment modalities for this disease. Finally, the third speaker will discuss the role of plasma exchange in support of pediatric patients undergoing renal and cardiac transplantation, including its use in the settings of pretransplant alloimmunization and acute and chronic allograft rejection and for the treatment of recurrent focal sclerosing glomerulonephritis in the renal allograft.
