Description
Over the past decade our understanding of the manifestation of hemoglobin S in human disease has broadened to encompass the profound and pathological inflammation present in these diseases. The discovery of entirely novel inflammatory mechanisms and consequences has now been described. These descriptions are actively being translated into important therapeutic venues for the sickling disorders. Within the past year, a new appreciation for the potential pathology of sickle cell trait has come to the forefront of the field as well. The speakers in this session will discuss the expanding role of inflammation and new methods to alleviate it in sickle cell disease. The session will also highlight the emerging role of sickle cell trait in inflammation in kidney disease.
