Description
Review the molecular basis of blood group antigens and their variants that are important in sickle cell disease. The presentation will focus on the relationship between genotype and phenotype, along with the translation of this information into transfusion management strategies for sickle cell patients.

  • Describe the concept of genetic haplotypes in the Rh blood group system
  • Identify transfusion management strategies used to limit alloimmunization
  • Provide an example of genotype-matched blood used to treat sickle cell patients
  • Review the molecular basis of blood group antigens, and the relationship between genotype and phenotype
