Description
While training programs are often well-developed for laboratory and nursing staff, this often is not the case for Information Technology (IT) staff. This workshop will describe a training curriculum for IT staff that is under development by the AABB Information Systems Committee. The workshop will provide educators with the basic requirements to develop an IT curriculum. Such a curriculum would need to include:
an understanding of how IT duties fit into the regulated environment of blood banking, basic knowledge areas for IT staff working in a blood bank (e.g., understanding the business, recruitment to transfusion; regulations, standards, risk assessment, coding standards, HIPAA and system security), IT staff role in validation and verification, and advanced topics (e.g., ROI analysis practices, system selection, disaster recovery strategies)

  • Develop a training curriculum for Information Technology staff.
  • Identify the training needs of Information Technology staff in a blood bank.
