Demonstration of RFID Within Blood Center Processes
Description
Initial studies show that RFID technology has the potential to increase the efficiency, quality, and safety of the blood supply chain. This session will provide an update on a major NIH funded study and product development for an RFID blood solution. Foundational education on RFID technology is provided, but the session moves on to address various safety questions regarding the use of RFID with blood products and in our work environment, as well as the survivability and reliability of RFID under normal operations. A demonstration of the integration of RFID within existing processes and systems is also provided.

LEARNER OUTCOMES:
  • Address questions regarding how RFID can be integrated with existing systems, including barcodes.
  • Assess efficiency, quality, and safety gains that can occur with the use of RFID in the blood supply chain.
  • Provide a basic understanding of RFID technology.
  • Review key components of the safety of RFID technology within a blood center and hospital relative to blood products and EMI.
