The How, Who, and What in Reporting Transfusion Rates in Clinical Practice
Irwin Gross, MD, Medical Director, Transfusion Services, Eastern Maine Medical Center
Description
What challenges and opportunities can your center attain by tracking individual or service line specialty transfusion rates? Are there regulatory benefits to tracking transfusion data? Each speciality brings its own challenges due to patient population. Formatting may need to change for any given diagnosis or ordering physician. How do you identify who ordered the blood to be administered vs the doctor who only ordered a type and screen? Do particular physician personalities influence how the data are presented? How can you format and present data to achieve the best practice possible and influence patient outcome? Two centers share their experiences and outcomes of this evolving process.

LEARNER OUTCOMES:
  • Assess how data brings clarity regarding where your transfusion practice is presently and where improvements are necessary.
  • Discover your physicians can act as a benchmark for their peers in transfusion practice.
  • Identify your center's standard of care when it comes to transfusion rates and/or goals.
  • Review the emphasis placed by regulatory agencies on annual proof of best practice in all fields, including transfusion.
