Description
The AABB Clinical Transfusion Medicine Committee (CTMC) has been developing evidence-based guidelines for clinical transfusion practice. The American Society for Apheresis (ASFA) has also developed evidence-based guidelines for therapeutic apheresis procedures. This session will describe the processes, present the initial published results of this work and describe ongoing efforts at guideline development. The first speaker will explain the methodology for systematically collecting and statistically analyzing existing studies in the literature addressing the efficacy of plasma transfusion in the treatment of a variety of conditions. He will also describe the GRADE approach and how it was applied to developing plasma guidelines. The second speaker will discuss a parallel effort to systematically review the literature and prepare guidelines for RBC transfusion. The third speaker will describe the recently published comprehensive ASFA guidelines as well as ongoing efforts to develop the next version of these guidelines.
-
Compare and contrast the methods used by AABB and ASFA to develop practice guidelines.
-
Discuss the application of the GRADE methodology to develop clinical practice guidelines.
-
