Evidence Based Rationale for Transfusion Thresholds for Sickle Cell Disease Patients
Description
This session will review the scientific rationale for the provision of antigen matched RBCs for patients with sickle hemoglobinopathies. Various molecular and serologic strategies for the provision of these products will be discussed. An evidence-based medicine approach will be provided to the audience regarding transfusion targets. Transfusion support issues in patients undergoing stem cell transplantation will be critically examined.
-
Describe the rationale of providing antigen matched RBCs to patients with sickle hemoglobinopathies and to construct a rationale protocol for molecular and serological typing in these patients.
-
Discuss the basis of current recommendations for transfusion thresholds in sickle cell disease and understand the current state of knowledge of proper dosing and administration rate in these patients.
-
Examine transfusion support issues in sickle cell patients with special needs (i.e. patients undergoing stem cell transplantation who are highly alloimmununized and are ABO incompatible with the donor).
