Description
Blood center leaders have long insisted their teams act prudently as they conduct their activities, especially in the areas of recruitment and collections. They have set objectives and put controls in place to help contain the cost per unit in order to remain competitive in their blood center's service fee structure; while at the same time assuring a readily available blood supply to their customer base. When the external environment changes, are the same objectives still valid or must they be radically altered? Will there be a need to increase or decrease collections and what will be the ramifications to staff as the new business plans are introduced?
LEARNER OUTCOMES:
-
Determine whether some established strategies have to be reconsidered, e.g. blood drives hosted in distant locations.
-
Discuss incentive-based pay structures, the consequences to staff satisfaction and commitment to mission when the new emphasis might be limited recruitment criteria.
-
Explore recruitment by specific blood type or elimination of small donor groups as response to an abundant blood supply.
-
Review what alternative methods are being used to adjust to the changing environment.
