Mouse Models of Beta-Thalassemia
Description
The overall goal of this session is to discuss how the use of mouse models can improve our understanding of human diseases relevant to the transfusion medicine community because of the use of coagulation factors (i.e. in von Willebrand's disease), therapeutic apheresis (i.e. in thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura), and chronic RBC transfusion therapy (i.e. in beta-thalassemia). To this end, short lectures on the following three topics will be provided by investigators currently working with these mouse models:
mouse models of von Willebrand disease: Insights into platelet adhesion and von Willebrand factor function,
use of mouse models to study the role ADAMTS13 plays in thrombotic disorders, and
mouse models of beta-thalassemia.
-
Describe the roles of ADAMTS13, and inhibitors thereof, in the pathogenesis of human thrombotic disorders.
-
Discuss the roles of von Willebrand factor in normal platelet function and in the pathogenesis of human bleeding disorders.
-
Explain the pathogenesis of beta-thalassemia and the effects of iron overload in this disorder of ineffective erythropoiesis.
