Description
This session is intended to introduce the participants to the Biomedical Excellence for Safer Transfusion (BEST) Collaborative, an international research consortium. Presentations will be made on the four main areas of research focus of BEST: cellular therapies, conventional components, transfusion safety and clinical trials, with an emphasis on the outcomes of the BEST research effort and what the future holds. The first half of the session will consist of 4 presentations, while the second half of the session will have one remaining presentation followed by a panel discussion.

Describe the organization and evolution of the BEST Collaborative.

Gain an understanding of the multiple perspectives influencing the direction of research: patient, clinician, blood service and commercial supplier.

Identify areas for future research efforts in blood components and cellular therapies.

Report on research progress and future studies in the areas of transfusion safety and transfusion clinical trials.
