Description
OBJECTIVES:
Discuss the effects of population aging on predicted increases in the need for blood components and predicted decreases in the size of the eligible donor pool during the next several decades.
Recognize the prevalence of iron deficiency in first time and repeat blood donors and the relative value of various tests to detect iron deficiency.
Become familiar with formulas that allow post-donation hemoglobin value and donor weight to be used to predict pre-donation hemoglobin value in whole blood donors.
Describe the differences in hemoglobin concentration between first time and repeat blood donors and the general U.S. population and discuss the possible causes of these differences.
