Weak D: Implications for Blood Donors, Transfusion Recipients, and Pregnancy
Program Code: 5031-S Saturday, October 21, 2006
4:00 PM to 5:30 PM (ET)
MODERATOR George Garratty, PhD, FRCPath, American Red Cross Blood Services
SPEAKERS Willy A. Flegel, MD, University of Ulm Gregory Denomme, PhD, FCSMLS(D), BloodCenter of Wisconsin
DESCRIPTION
Weak D has always been a problem since D was first described because it has always confused blood transfusion scientists and physicians (e.g., understanding why an individual should be labeled as Rh+ as a donor and Rh- as a recipient for blood or Rh prophylaxis). The speakers will discuss the different approaches and contrast serology with molecular approaches in regard to weak D.
