DESCRIPTION
Blood collection organizations throughout the world are beginning to move towards implementing computer systems designed to automate and manage the blood donation process. The goal, for most, is to enhance the donation experience while increasing the efficiency of collection staff. Additionally, electronic capture of the entire donation process, from registration through phlebotomy, will ultimately result in a paperless donation process. Implementation of an automated system, however, is neither inexpensive nor easy. This program will present the experiences of three blood collection organizations that decided to move forward with automation, their successes and what they might have done differently if they had it all to do over again.
