DESCRIPTION
Almost $2 billion has been spent on developing alternative oxygen carriers since 1990. This session will present three lectures: 1) Why we want alternative oxygen carriers, 2) Why we worry about alternative oxygen carriers, and 3) Alternative oxygen carriers, the path ahead. The speakers will review current clinical dilemmas raised by increasing understanding of transfusion related immunomodulation, history and toxicity of present products, and how these seemingly contradictory views of the products may be resolved through research, clinical trials and regulatory decisions.
