DESCRIPTION
This event will consist of two lectures. The first speaker will describe issues surrounding blood conservation. Some of the areas to be covered include transfusion limitations, risks and costs and alternative therapies. In light of emerging diseases and decreasing blood supplies, health care providers need to be aware of new options for patients who require blood components. The second speaker is involved with stem cell banking and research with the Toronto Cord Blood Program, Canada's largest and most established cord blood program. This talk will provide information on the process of banking cord blood, technologies to enhance stem cell storage and innovative approaches related to cell therapy.
