Description
This presentation examines the relationship between service learning programs like the Community Problem Solving component of Future Problem Solving and Dabrowski's third factor or developmental instinct the impulse felt by some gifted individuals to transcend basic physical needs and social conformity in service to a self-selected goal of perceived greater importance. For gifted young people already displaying a strong developmental instinct, service-learning programs like CmPS can provide an organized outlet for their self-chosen goals. For students whose third factors are still emerging, such programs can provide an environment where their third factors can flourish.
